Refrigeration Equipment and Cold Room Machinery

This section provides an overview of the machinery and equipment typically used in constructing a cold room or cold store facility. Key components include compressors, condensers, and evaporators, with additional elements such as electrical panels, valves, control devices, and protective equipment forming part of cold room facilities. The focus here is on introducing the primary equipment with the most significant impact on the price, quality, efficiency and lifespan of a cold store. For more detailed information, you can also explore the cold store section.

Cold Room Compressor

The cold room compressor, the heart of the refrigeration cycle and cold room equipment, comes in various types categorized by operation (rotary or reciprocating), refrigerant type (ammonia or freon), construction (hermetic, semi-hermetic, and open), and compression stages (single-stage or two-stage). Selection depends on specific requirements and budget. Reputable brands include Grasso, Sabroe, Mycom, Danfoss, Copeland, Bitzer, Refcomp, and Bock.

Cold Room Evaporator

Functioning as a heat exchanger, the evaporator is installed inside the cold room facility. It reduces the room temperature by creating air circulation within the cold room and passing it through the evaporator coil. Design and manufacture consider factors such as working temperature, product type, refrigerant, defrost type and cold room capacity. Detailed specifications can be found in the evaporator section.

Cold Room Condenser

Another heat exchanger, the condenser’s role is to transfer heat from inside the cold room and the compressor to the environment. It can be air-cooled or water-cooled, transferring heat to air or water. If using an air-cooled condenser, it should be placed in an open space to enable efficient cooling. More information is available in the condenser section.

Cold Room Insulation

Due to temperature differences with the surroundings, cold room facilities require insulation. It is crucial to achieve complete sealing of joints in connection lines, often done by installing flashings and injecting polyurethane materials. Polyurethane sandwich panels are commonly used for pre-made insulation in cold rooms. Explore the cold room insulation section for further details.
